The last bronze medal won by Pakistan was 24 years ago in 1992 in Barcelona Olympics. After Barcelona, Pakistan hockey team participated in 5 Olympics but failed to show any significant performance, the squad always remained an integral part of Pakistan’s Olympic contingent giving a sense of satisfaction to the fans but Rio is the first time that Pakistan even failed to qualify for the hockey competition.
Expressing his views in an interview, Manzoor Jr. the captain of the winning team at Los Angeles Olympics who won a bronze said “No one had ever thought that Pakistan hockey would deteriorate to such a level, there is no dearth of talent in the country but the system required to groom this talent is missing.” He further said, Academies have been set up throughout the country, had these academies performed effectively we would not have faced such a situation. He advised the existing hockey federation to make their plans bearing in mind 2018 and 2022 and if they start planning now they can expect to see good results in the days to come. He emphasized that the hockey federation must develop young players for the future.
