Afridi’s days as captain numbered
Pakistan made a sparkling start to the tournament after defeating Bangladesh in convincing fashion but their loss against arch rivals India has given rise to new controversies.
The Pakistan cricket board is adamant that this World T20 is the last time Afridi will be captaining the team and his career is also about to come to a close despite the fact that Afridi indicated that he is under pressure to keep playing cricket after the World T20 ends. Afridi’s statement regarding ‘love for India’ has clearly displeased the Board which is why they believe that it’s time for him to move on.
“There is clear discontent in the Board about Afridi and his performances and captaincy and even if he decides against retiring after the World T20, the board will not retain him as captain any longer and even his days as a player are ending now,” a Pakistan Cricket Board source said according to Press Trust of India
“The Board is also privately not happy with the media statements of Afridi and believe it is time to move on,” he said.
The source also confirmed that the selection committee led by former cricketer Haroon Rasheed will also be shown the door and new faces will be brought in as the current members of the selection committee were not happy with the way things are concerned are run under Haroon Rasheed.
“No matter whether Pakistan reaches the semi-finals or even wins the title the selection committee headed by Haroon Rasheed is on its way out,” one source confided.
“What emerged was that some of the selectors complained Haroon kept them isolated on some key decisions while the chief selector blamed the captain and coach for some of the players selected in recent times,” the source said.
The PCB has also decided to change the head coach of Pakistan cricket team but the final decision is yet to be made regarding whether a local coach should be preferred or a foreign one.
“Initially the plan was to extend Waqar’s contract till the England tour but now this seems unlikely and there is discussion going on about having a foreign coach or a local one,” another source disclosed.
