Azhar Ali cautious about his ODI captaincy
Lahore: ODI Captain Azhar Ali seems concerned about his captaincy as the campaign to make Sarfraz Ahmad captain of all three formats is in full swing.
According to details coach Waqar Younus and captain Shahid Afridi resigned from their positions due to their reckless performance in the Asia Cup and WT20, under such a situation PCB decided on Tuesday to announce the appointment of Sarfraz Ahmad as permanent captain forT20. Wicket keeper-batsman has already been performing as vice captain under Azhar Ali in OD team. On the other end certain circles have become active in moving a campaign to make Sarfraz an OD captain.
Some of the former players also carry the same view, Abdul Qadir said I agree with Imran Khan’s suggestion to make Sarfraz captain of all three formats, he can become a good captain. He said Imran would always be remembered as the winning captain for 1992 World Cup therefore his suggestions carry lot of weight. Abdul Qadir was disappointed on coach Waqar and Shahid Afridi for not accepting the responsibility of poor performance.
Former opener Amir Sohail said Sarfraz needs to establish himself first as a T20 captain and then be given further responsibilities. He said I am not against a wicket keeper becoming a captain of three formats but would prefer a gradual handing over of responsibilities.
Ramiz Raja hoped that Sarfraz would learn from captain Mahindar Singh Dhoni who has steered his team to the heights of success during the past decade. The former captain suggested PCB to make an immediate change in strategy and appoint wicket keeper-batsman as test captain also. He has shown his 100 percent performance and I have never seen him complaining of his batting position. He posses all the qualities and would keep improving as a captain with the passage of time.
