Azhar Ali should be stripped off captaincy in ODIs, says Mohammad Ilyas
Lahore: Former Chief Selector Muhammad Ilyas suggests removal of Azhar Ali from ODI captaincy and to confine himself to Test cricket only. He said “His performance is being affected by being part of both formats of cricket. In my opinion he must distance himself from T20’s and ODI cricket.”
The former Pakistan cricketer in an interview said, “Technically Azhar Ali is a very sound batsman he is being unable to perform in the England Tests because he’s stuck up in short-format cricket and is also carrying pressure of ODI captaincy. My suggestion is to keep him away from short format cricket for the time being.”
It is worthy to mention that during Muhammad Ilyas’s tenure as a chief selector, Pakistan team not only won the England Test series by 3-0, but his selected Women’s cricket team won the Asia Cup and the Boy’s U-13 won the SAARC Cup title.
The former chief selector while commenting on Old Trafford Test defeat said “Pakistani cricketers instead of showing patience started losing wickets in a hurry. On the contrary the English batsmen fought very well and were not scared of Yasir Shah’s bowling.” He further said “We still have a problem with our openers in the series and the time has come to bring change in the openers and Sami Aslam or some other player should open the innings.” He said “Younus Khan is a senior team member but I fail to understand why he keeps jumping on the wicket, how long can Misbah alone keep playing. It is very essential for all the team members to give his best to produce good results in the rest of the series.”
Muhammad Ilyas while replying to a question said “In our times the cricket series was spread on many months but despite that the players were not allowed to take their families along. PCB must immediately send the families back to Pakistan so that the players are focused to their game.”
