‘Chef de Mission’ Nomination for Rio Olympics creates tension between the government and POA
Lahore: The nomination of ‘Chef de mission’ for Rio Olympics once again might create unrest at the government and Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) level. Despite the government’s objection, POA has appointed Shaukat Jawed as Chef de mission, who has been criticizing policies, to head the mega event.
Sources from the Inter-Provincial ministry revealed that the government had refused to grant NOC to the Pakistan squad on the nomination of Baseball Federation Chairman Shaukat Jawed as chef de mission for the Rio Olympics.
POA through a letter had assured the government that they would try their best to remove his name after which the NOC was issued from the prime minister’s house. However, no practical measures were taken and once again the situation has become uncomfortable between both the parties.
In the beginning of the current year, due to the intervention of International Olympic Committee, the government of Pakistan accepted Syed Arif Hassan’s POA and gave possession of the Olympic House. They released all their bank accounts to bring both the parties in a comfort zone, but, the present situation has once again triggered the issue and set them apart.
On the other hand, POA says the decision for changing the Chef de mission was delayed by the government because the entry of Olympic squad officials was sent many months earlier and a sudden change now is not possible.
