Chitral downs Gilgit-Baltistan to win Shandur Polo tournament
Chitral: The traditional Shandur Polo Festival concluded on Sunday with Chitral-A defeating Gilgit-Baltistan-A to clinch the Shandur Polo tournament.
In the presence of Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, who was the chief guest on the final day of this three day festival, the Chitral side dominated the proceedings and won the match by a score of 10-5. The victorious side was handed over the elusive trophy by the Army Chief himself.
The festival which dates back to 1936 attracts thousands of local and foreign tourists and features polo matches, paragliding, jumping, horse dances, tug of war and local cultural music and folk dances.
Although earlier there were chances that the tournament might be called off due to differences between Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral over the ownership of the Shandur Pass but efforts from the Frontier Corps resolved the issue and ensured that the event took place.
The provincial government provides adequate funds for this tournament to the Chitral administration because of it’s international fame and due to the fact that it is organized at the world’s highest polo ground.
