England Still Feeling The Pain After 23 years!

‘We were robbed!’ read the headline in the English national newspaper ‘The Daily Mail’ on Thursday
12th February. The article was written by former England all rounder Derek Pringle. ‘England would
have won the 1992 World Cup says bowler denied the key wicket in final.’

The key wicket Pringle was referring to was of Javed Miandad, he was given not out after two
appeals for LBW off Pringle’s bowling. He blames ‘eccentric umpiring’ by West Indian Steve Bucknor.
In response to Pringle’s claims I would say ‘Deal with it, get over it!’. Steve Bucknor was one of the
best international umpires, well respected by all teams. The umpires decision, at that time was final,
DRS was 20 years away. For decades touring teams to England had to suffer similar decisions going
in the home team’s advantage. That’s why Imran Khan campaigned for neutral umpires to be

Pringle goes on to state that the out of shape Ian Botham arrived later for the tournament as he was
in the pantomime ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ for Christmas. Botham was always a man who got his
priorities right! The English players were also stressed as they had to do their own laundry.
England in the group stages demolished Pakistan for 74 all out. Then it rained and the match was
drawn, a relief for Pakistan. Pringle declined to blame anybody for this most unfortunate natural

He goes onto to say that the night before the final both teams were invited to a dinner function by
the Australian hosts. An impersonator of the Queen was booked for the event. This offended some
members of the England team resulting in Botham and Gooch walking out. Great team spirit guys!
Had Imran walked out the whole team would have followed.

Having thoroughly researched the final between England and Pakistan for 23 years, I will summarise
why England lost. Batting first Pakistan lost 2 quick wickets however Imran Khan (72 runs) and an ill
feeling Javed Miandad (58 runs) steadied the ship. When Gooch dropped a chance from Imran, he
effectively dropped the World Cup. An impressive Inzamam ul Haq scored 42 off 35 balls, Wasim
Akram a quickfire 33 off 19 balls. Total score 249.

In reply the England batsmen were unable to deal with the awesome swing of Wasim (3/49) and
Aqib Javed and were mystified by Mustaq’s leg spin (3/41). Pakistan also used their secret weapon of
reverse swing. Which was only understood by other teams 20 years later. England fell 22 runs short
of the required total. The rest is history.

On the day England were thoroughly outplayed by Pakistan in batting, bowling and fielding. England
had all the talent but no teamwork. Derek Pringle in response to your article, I don’t feel England
were ‘robbed’. Your team lost to a better team on the day, that’s cricket. You and your fellow
players need to shoulder the responsibility for the defeat and not blame one of the best umpires
around, Steve Bucknor. I think it’s a case of sour grapes, even after 23 years.
But for Pakistan cricket fans, it was the greatest day of their lives.
