Hafeez fails to impress in side match

SHARJAH: Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo grabbed three wickets as West Indies geared up for the Test series against Pakistan with a three-day tour game starting on Friday in Sharjah.

The 30-year-old from Guyana finished with 3-77 in 29 overs as a Pakistan Cricket Board Patron’s XI scored 241-5 on the first day, played with a pink ball because it is a day-night game.

At close Asif Zakir was unbeaten on nine and Adnan Akmal was 26 not out after the Patron’s XI won the toss and batted.

The fixture is a warm-up for the day-night Test — the first in Asia — starting in Dubai from October 13. Pakistan will announce the squad for the three-match Test series on Saturday.

For the Patron’s XI Iftikhar Ahmed (63), Shan Masood (58) and Ahmed Shehzad (52) all got good starts but failed to score big in their attempts to stake Test claims.

Opener Mohammad Hafeez fell for nought in the third over in his attempt to regain the place he lost at The Oval on Pakistan’s tour of England in August.

Masood was also dropped on that tour while Shehzad was not selected for the England trip.

Iftikhar, who replaced Hafeez at The Oval, hit six boundaries and two sixes before he became one of Bishoo’s wickets.

Masood was run out after smashing two sixes and three fours while Shehzad was caught off Bishoo.

Skipper Fawad Alam (32) became Bishoo’s third wicket, giving the West Indies some hope of matching Pakistan in a Test series likely to be dominated by spinners.

West Indies were whitewashed 3-0 in the Twenty20 and one-day series which preceded this.

The remaining two Tests — both day affairs — will be played in Abu Dhabi (October 21-25) and Sharjah (October 30-November 3).
