Incredible Brathwaite and Calm Samuels crowns West Indies WT20 Champions again
West Indies defeated England in the final of the World T20 in Eden Gardens after an absolutely nerve-wrecking contest. England set up a total of 155/9, West Indies chased down the target with 4 wickets and 2 balls to spare.
Samuel Badree started off the proceedings for West Indies after Darren Sammy won the toss and chose to bowl first. Badree struck on his second delivery of the over, where he cleaned up Jason Roy with a beauty.
Andre Russell shared the new ball with the no. 1 World T20 bowler and didn’t take long to remove Alex Hales (1), the English opener found the short fine leg fielder with perfection.
England was in deep trouble when their skipper Eion Morgan (5) also joined Roy and Hales in the dugout after edging a googly from Badree to Chris Gayle at the slip at the score of 23/3.
Once again English vice captain, Josh Buttler stepped in with the dynamic Joe Root to rebuild the innings. The two contributed 61 runs together before Buttler (36) flat batted Barathwaite straight to Dwayne Bravo in the deep and the crowd was entertained with a ‘Champion dance’ performance.
Ben Stokes walked in to join Joe Root in the middle, but, he couldn’t do anything significant. Stokes (13) was undone by a slower one from Bravo, Moeen Ali followed his teammate and he went without scoring a run.
England did well to recover from a position of 23/3 to 84/4, but, they were again falling apart as West Indies took three quick wickets to put England at a vulnerable position of 111/7 when Root (54) holed out a dolly to short fine leg while trying a scoop.
David Willey came in and contributed a quick-fire 21 runs that took England to a competitive total of 155 runs.
It was an unreal win for West Indies, they were 3 down on 11 runs and it seemed like they almost lost the game. But, Samuels stood between England and the victory, he scored 85 off 66 runs. But, the real hero for West Indies was Brathwaite.
West Indies needed 19 runs in the last over and it took 4 deliveries for Carlos Brathwaite to hit four consecutive 6’s and steer West Indies to an unbelievable victory and crown them World T20 Champions once again.
It was Morgan intelligence that he attacked with Joe Root in the second over of the innings that got England two quick wickets in shape of Johnson Charles and Chris Gayle. Soon after them, the hero of the last match Lendl Simmons scored a golden duck.
Dwayne Bravo and Marlon Samuels worked extremely hard to bring West Indies to a stable position, 88/4. Bravo scored a hard fought 25 off 27 runs.
It was Marlon Samuels, who was a lone warrior for the men from Caribbean, he was losing his partners at the other end without much of a contribution.
Carlos Brathwaite arrived at the crease, when West Indies needed almost 12 runs per over. Samuels kept scoring boundaries from one end, whereas, Brathwaite struggled to middle the ball till the last over.
Ben Stokes came to bowl the last six balls of the innings, where West Indies needed 19 runs off it. But, Brathwaite effortlessly hit 4 consecutive 6’s to give West Indies the huge win by 4 wickets.
Marlon Samuels was awarded the Man of the Match for his fantastic innings of 85 off 66 deliveries, his innings comprised of 9 boundaries and 2 big 6’s.
West Indies is crowned the World T20 for the second time after 2012. They celebrated with the ‘Champion dance’ in the middle. Early in the day, West Indies women also won the World T20 for the first time, beating Australia convincingly.
