Pakistan win first battle in Auckland

New Zealand won the toss against Pakistan in the first of the three match T20 series at Auckland today. Pakistan have brought back pacer Mohammad Amir and Umar Gul into their side.

Pakistan XI: A Shehzad, M Hafeez, S Maqsood, S Malik, U Akmal, S Afridi, S Ahmed, I Wasim, Wahab Riaz, U Gul, M Amir

New Zealand XI: M Guptill, K Williamson, C Munro, C Anderson, G Elliott, L Ronchi, M Santner, T Astle, A Milne, M Henry, T Boult

At the end of 4 overs Pakistan are 23/0. In the 5th over Ahmed Shehzad was dismissed for 16 runs by Milne. Sohaib Maqsood was the next batsman to replace Ahmed. Hafeez was looking in good form and was scoring runs all around the park.

Sohaib Maqsood was dismissed for a duck by Santner when the ball turned away from the batsman and the score was 52/2. At the end of 7th over Pakistan were 54/2.

At the end of 9 overs Pakistan were 63/2 with Malik and Hafeez looking to set the tone for a high total.

In the 11th over Pakistan were dealt another blow as Malik was dismissed for 20 runs when the score was 78 runs.

Hafeez completed his 8th international T20 fifty as the score reached 94 in the 13th over. Hafeez was dismissed for 61 off 46 balls when the score was 110/4 . His innings included 8 fours and 2 sixes. Captain Shahid Afridi walked into bat at this crucial juncture.

Shahid Afridi blasted Henry for 2 sixes and two fours and paved Pakistan’s way to a big total but in the process Umar Akmal was dismissed for 24 off 14 balls. The score stood at 146/5. Shahid Afridi also mad ehis way back to the hut as he scooped a shot straight to Williamson off the bowling off Boult for 23 off 8 balls.

Sarfraz Ahmed was dismissed for 2 runs at the last ball of 19th over and the score was 167/7. Imad Wasim was caught in the last over for a well made 18 runs off 9 balls.

Pakistan set the Kiwi side a target of 172 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Hafeez top scored with 61 runs while Umar Akmal and Shahid Afridi scored 24 and 23 runs respectively.

Adam Milne who bowled quick and troubled the batsman picked up 4 wickets for 37 runs while Boult and Hnery picked up 1 wicket each.

In reply New Zealand got off to a good start and were 74/1 at the end of 8 overs. Pakistan got two wickets in quick succession to left New Zealand in some sort of trouble at 92/3.

At the end of 13 overs Kiwis were 107/3 and were on track for victory but Afridi took 2 wickets in one over to turn the tide in Pakistan’s favor. New Zealand slipped to 107/5 in 13.5 overs.

Afridi took a brilliant catch to dismiss Santner off the bowling of Umar Gul. The Guldozer then rocked the Kiwi batting lineup once again through a brilliantly executed yorker to dismiss Astle.


Mohammad Amir sent Henry packing for 10 runs which was the first wicket in international cricket after 5 years for the pacer.

Wahab and Amir bowled two superb overs at the death to restrict the Kiwi side at a total of 155 runs and won the match by 16 runs.

Shahid Afridi was given the award for man of the match for leading the team from the front.
