Madrid derby drawn and the Catalans poor run continues

La Liga has made a radically different start this season as the likes of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have failed to strengthen their position at the top which is unusual at the end of week seven.

FC Barcelona were hosted by the competent Sevilla side who are a strong side playing at home. The match started with usual fashion with Barca retaining possession for long periods of time but the finishing was not up to the mark. The first half ended at 0-0 with shots on goals from both sides. The second half started with Sevilla taking the initiative and applying pressure on the struggling Barca defensive four. In the 52nd minute Krohn Dehli broke the deadlock. A few minutes later Iborra doubled the lead for the home side and put them in with a great chance of earning a famous win against the Catalan side. Although Neymar brought Barca back into the match after scoring from the spot but that proved to be a non sufficient and Sevilla came out triumphant after the referee blew the final whistle.

In the most exciting match of this season’s La Liga the Madrid derby was scheduled to take place on Sunday at the Calderon. Although Bale was declared fit before the match but Rafa decided against including him in the side. The match started with Real Madrid taking a couple of shots at goal and finally in the 9th minute they did manage to score through a cross from Dani  Carvajal which was headed home by the Frenchman Karim Benzema. The hosts did not take a step back and rejuvenated to land attacks at regular intervals. The earned a penalty in the mid period of the first half but their leading striker Antoine Griezmann foiled the chance to bring the home side on level terms as Keylor Navas made a superb save. The Los Blancos stayed in the lead till the match entered the last 10 minutes but In the 83rd minute Atletico equalized through a goal from Vietto which proved to be the last major action of the night. Both teams had to go away with a point each which meant that Real Madrid are now second in the ladder above and are tied on 15 points with rivals FC Barcelona and Celta Di Vigo. Real Madrid, on goal difference, are now ahead of their arch rivals FC Barcelona.

In other matches league leaders Villarreal lost to relegation zone team Levante (0-1) and missed the opportunity to stretch their lead at the top as Deyverson spoiled their party by scoring in the late stages of the match.

The points table from the top half at the end of the week  makes an interesting read (Via Sky Sports Football)
