Argentinian great Diego Maradona has said that star footballer Lionel Messi lacks leadership skills and he does not possess the ability to lead his side.
Maradona was caught on microphone discussing about the Barca star with Brazil legend Pele at a publicity event on Thursday in Paris where he said that the current Argentinian side is dependent on Messi.
“He’s a really good person, but he has no personality,” Maradona said according to goal.com.
“He lacks [the] character to be a leader.”
Pele responded: “Ah, I get it, he’s not like we were back in the days. In the 70s we [Brazil] had really good players like Rivellino, Gerson, Tostao.
“Not like Argentina now, which depends only on Messi. He [Maradona] is saying that Messi is a good player, there’s no doubt about it, but he has no personality.”
Maradona’s statement could well be in line with some of the fans in Argentina because it has often been said that Messi fails to deliver to showcase the same level of football which he plays at the helm of Spanish football in La Liga for FC Barcelona.
The 28 year old Messi has twice lost in the final of the Copa America and not to forget the 2014 FIFA World Cup loss to Germany. His only significant achievement with Argentina is the gold medal that he won back in 2008 at the Olympics.
