Miami Open: Navarro eliminates Williams to face Petkovic in semis
MIAMI: Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro made a comeback after suffering a bagel in the first set to defeat three time champion Venus Williams 0-6 6-1 7-5 to enter the semi final of Miami Open, ARYSports.tv reports.
She will meet Andrea Petkovic in the tournament’s semi finals.
Petkovic qualified for the semi final after defeating Karolina Pliskova 6-4 6-2.
Williams was in total control throughout the first set as she thrashed Navarro 6-0 in less than half an hour but Navarro was able to regroup and regain her confidence.
She won the second set 6-1 to take the match to the third and final set.
One-sided exchanges were witnessed in the third set until Navarro broke Williams to go 5-4 only to be broken back by the three time champion.
Petkovic went 4-1 up in the first set but the 23-year-old Pliskova won three consecutive games to make it 4-4. Petkovic managed to save three break points.
She won the next five games to qualify for the semis.
Meanwhile, Serena Williams will face Sabine Lisicki whereas Simona Halep will take on Sloane Stephens.
