Pakistan cricket needs over hauling

Pakistan’s World Cup 2015 campaign ended in the quarter final against the co-hosts Australia. Apart from few players’ brilliance was a very disappointing one. Let’s just look at the mistakes which the green shirts made in the mega event.

Firstly, except for Misbah-ul-haq and Sarfaraz Ahmed, our batting failed miserably throughout the tournament. Our openers didn’t provided good starts whilethe lower and middle order, from whom there were plenty of expectations, also gave lackluster performances, leaving Team Pakistan always short of 30 to 50 runs in every game they played. A question arises that why the selectors overlooked Fawad Alam or Azhar Ali the two players in the tournament of such high caliber.

Our fielding was the most pathetic of all the teams in the taking part in the World Cup as they dropped15 catches which isthe highest numberin the mega event. After seeing such a performance in the field, we can hardly understand what the fielding coach is doing as most of the fielders don’t seem like taking even the simplest of the catches.

I want to ask that why Junaid Khan was not sent as a replacement for the injured Khan in the quarter final Muhammad Irfanbut waited for the team to qualify for the semi final. Junaid’s inclusion would have been handy and would have provided the support to WahabRiazfor keeping pressure at both ends.

However the loss can be a blessing in disguise for us as it could help us resolve our weaknesses and now it’s the right time to get the basics rightand build a better team for the 2019 World Cup in England.  Changes are required from the top to the bottom in PCB starting from the selectors for picking a poor and unbalanced team for the mega event to our stubborn coach for allowing his ego to get the better of him while selecting the playing XI.

The right option for Waqar’s position is legendary bowler Wasim Akram as he already has been a very successful coach with the IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders and has handy experience of managing international stars whereas he understands the English conditions as he has was performing with Englishcounty Lancashire for a decade.

Axing chief selector Moin khan and Najam Sethi would be very beneficial for PCB as well and the most important PCB should improve its domestic structure.

However the rebuilding of the team should start by dropping UmerAkmal, Shoaib Maqsood, Nasir Jamshed and they should be asked to play domestic cricket for some time to improve their mindset and skills. The most important job should be to find a skillfulmiddle order batman as we have failed to find a replacement for Muhammad Yousaf and the following few talented youngsters such asHammad Azam, Sharjeel Khan, Sami Aslam, Imam-ul-Haq, Kamran Ghulam, Babar Azam should be given chance to prove their mettle as our next tour is of Bangladesh.

Furthermore, retirement of Misbah-ul-Haq has made the position of captaincy vacant and there are plenty of candidates for the role. I personally think that the selectors should hand the responsibility toSarfrazor Wahabas both have shown fighting and attacking abilities which are required for a very good captain. They both play with alot of passion for their country.

The other options for leading the green shirts include Mohammad Hafeez and YounisKhan. As with Hafeez, he has to clear his bowling action firstas w he can’tcement a regular spot just as a batsman without his bowling. Youniswas a brilliant and gutsy captain but the only problem with him is will hebe able to play till the next World Cup without being a liability on the team.

Wahab looks the best option but for that he has to play consistently and work very hard on his batting to become a genuine all-rounder and a respected captain.

And lastly, ICC has given permission to PCB to play anywhere they desire until the security conditions aren’t conducive for the touringteams. With the next 2919 edition of the tournament, our cricketing board should reschedule more of its matches in England as to get their players well equipped with the conditions and improve their techniques according to the conditions there as it has declined while playing in the UAE conditions.
