Play resumes in Afghanistan-England
SYDNEY: Play in the World Cup Pool A match between Afghanistan and England at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday resume at 3:45pm local time after a 37-minute rain break.
At this stage, no overs had been lost. But with the skies above the SCG still overcast, further interruptions appeared likely.
Afghanistan were 24 for two in the ninth over when a shower saw the umpires take the players off the field.
The tournament debutants had just lost openers Nawroz Mangal (four) and Javed Ahmadi (seven) when play was halted.
Afsar Zazai was five not out and Nasir Jamal nought not out for Afghanistan, who had struggled for runs in overcast conditions in what was the non-Test side’s first one-day international against England.
James Anderson had figures of one for 11 in 4.5 overs come the stoppage, while fellow new-ball bowler Stuart Broad had one for eight in four.
Neither side were able to qualify for the quarter-finals, meaning their last group stage fixture was also their last match of the tournament. -AFP
