CHENNAI: Saqlain Mushtaq is making his way to become England’s full-time spin coach as Alastair Cook also demands a permanent spin coach from his board. He spoke positive about Saqlain and said as long as he stayed with the team, our spinners performed well.
According to details, former Pakistani spinner, Saqlain was originally hired as a spin-consultant for just the first fortnight of the tour but his contract was further extended till the third Test of India-England series after positive feedback from the spinners and markedly improved performances from Adil Rashid in particular who grabbed 13 out of 18 wickets in the initial three matches of the series. His average remained 28.67, however, in the last two matches Adil bowled 5 players at an average of 69 runs.
Since 2004 after the departure of Mushtaq Ahmed, England have never kept a regular spin coach, even during the home series with Pakistan, Saqlain’s services were acquired for a short while and the host team took great advantage of his presence.
The man who invented Doosra, himself had lately impressed upon the board to hire a full-time coach to face the upcoming challenges. Alastair mentioned that as long as Saqlain Mushtaq stayed with us, the team worked like a group and we did excellent bowling. He emphasized to look into this factor.
It may be noted that England utilized 6 spinners against India in the whole series Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, Zafar Ansari, Liam Dawson, Gareth Betty and Joe Root. They collectively took 40 wickets at an average of 40.18 which is England’s spinners’ group second worst performance in India. Prior to this, they faced a white-wash in 1992-93 during which the spinners performance was much worse.
