The French legend, Zidane turns 44
The legendary French soccer player, Zinedine Zidane was the one who led France to an astounding World Cup win. He won the FIFA player of the year three times in his career as well. He is often remembered as the legend who ended his career with a furious headbutt to his Italian counterpart, Marco Materazzi in World Cup final and was sent off. Today, the French legend has turned 44 years old today, on his big day, let’s know Zidane a bit more.
Zidane was named Zizou by one of his coaches at his former club, Bordeaux, Rolland Courbis to trim down his name which is a common practice in France.
Zidane was transferred to Real Madrid in 2001 at a record breaking transfer fee of more than $66 million. Soon after his signing, he drove his club to a UEFA title and a La Liga win.
Zidane is the first French coach in the 114 years old history of Real Madrid.
Zidane was in favor of awarding the Golden Ball to Frank Ribery instead of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013.
Zidane features in the FIFA 100 and Pele’s list of 125 greatest living soccer players.
