The Rio dream: Seven Pakistan boxers to fight it out in Baku qualifiers
The Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) has decided to field seven boxers in the upcoming Baku qualifiers which will be held in the city of Baku in Azerbaijan from the 16th of June till the 25th of June. The federation is hoping to bag the two slots for the prestigious Rio Olympics by showcasing their skills in these qualifiers and this event is the last chance for Pakistan boxers to seal a spot in the Olympics.
“Yes, we’ll send seven boxers to Baku to appear in the Olympic qualifier round in different weight categories,” PBF secretary Iqbal Hussain told Associated Press of Pakistan.
The boxers are currently going through a rigorous training camp at Pakistan Sports Complex Islamabad in order to prepare for the qualifiers as the federation wants them to give their all on this one final attempt.
“Currently, 20 boxers are undergoing extensive training at the camp under national boxing coach Arshad Hussain,” he further said.
Though Iqbal said that the final list of Pugilists for Baku qualifiers would be disclosed during the ongoing week, sources in the PBF revealed that the federation had already finalized six boxers for the event.
“It is almost decided that Awais Ali Khan (81kg), Mohammad Tanveer (75kg), Amir Khan (69kg), Ali Ahmed (60kg), Niamatullah (56kg) and Mohammad Asif (52kg) will be vying in the event to fulfill their Olympic dream,” he said.
