Why PSL is important for Pakistan?

I still remember how crazily we supported Lahore Badshahs in Indian Cricket League (ICL). It was a great sensation to see Imran Nazir score breath taking knocks. Lahore Badshahs were the team to beat in the ICL. The memories of his knock in the finale of ICL 08 are still fresh.

Later on IPL was introduced and T20 cricket was taken to a new level. IPL was so successful that the then chairman Lalith Modi disclosed that Manchester City F.C of the Prestigious English Premier League were thinking about buying an IPL franchise because of the profit margins. IPL is, rather than was, successful and it will continue to be successful the way it is organized every year. It is fair to say that IPL had a hand in turning the fortunes for the BCCI. The salaries are good for players, stands are jam packed, it is being followed worldwide and especially that Bollywood tarka adds too much spice in it. People love watching SRK and Preity Zinta cheer their teams up. Although I doubt if they have even an inch of knowledge about cricket.

Every cricket lover in Pakistan envied IPL and had a secret prayer in heart that may this time the BCCI allows Pakistani players to join in. But it was not the case and Pakistani players were constantly omitted from the auctions. It left us with the desperate hope. The hope of PCB hosting a prestigious cricket league in contest with the IPL.

We Pakistanis want to own a team. We want to cheer the team we support. We want to go to the stadiums. We want to taunt our friends when their team loses. We want to be proud of a product that is totally ours.

Not to mention the amount of exposure our juniors will get. We have a lot of raw talent and PSL would serve as a launching pad for all the talented youngsters who want to prove themselves in the international circuit. Players who have been discarded will try their best to prove the selectors wrong. The sensation of playing along with the likes of Pieterson, Jesse Ryder, Grant Elliot, Brad Haddin etc will lift the morale of the youngsters and they will try even harder to match international stars in fitness and skills. There is no doubt that Pakistan Cricket will flourish if the PSL successfully hits the market.

If the PSL becomes an event to watch (fingers crossed), PCB will benefit in the financial department as well and it will result in the betterment of domestic cricket. If the PCB would want to invest, they should invest some part of the profit in the renovation of the stadiums and stands since they are lagging behind the international standards. It is a very necessary step since the PSL could be hosted in Pakistan in the years to come (at least we can hope).

It will also serve as a foundation for our domestic players to be called for the county cricket. Playing county will help the players to be open-minded, communication skills and wide thinking. Some say living abroad also makes you brave (no evidence though).

PSL will help improve the image of Pakistan cricket among the fellow international teams. New relations will be developed among our players and the incoming players. They will get to know us better and it might help to eliminate the misconceptions they have about Pakistan.

Prayers are with PCB that they organize an event which is worth watching. I know PSL will not be at par with the IPL but hope that it doesn’t disappoint the people of our country. The whole nation is anxiously waiting for February next year.

Come on PSL!!! Let us be entertained!
