Williamson denies semifinal hoodoo

New Zealand at one stage of the tournament were favorites to be crowned World T20 champions for the first time but in a matter of few overs things changed drastically and they were eventually sent packing.

New Zealand lost 7 wickets for 64 runs in the second half of their innings and handed back the initiative to the English side which proved fatal and the onslaught from the English openers was the final nail in their coffin.

Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson was rightfully disappointed but he considered it as a day which belonged to the England side.

“It’s tough. People spoke about us being favourites at one stage and we lost. T20 cricket, there’s a lot of unknowns and a lot of uncontrollables and it’s who turns up on the day and plays the best cricket,” Williamson said.

“Every cricket game you play you look at it as an isolated event. You accept that when you turn up you want to play your best cricket, but if the other team plays better then you tend to come second. That’s what happened to us. We didn’t win. We didn’t play the better cricket,” Williamson said.

during the One Day International match between New Zealand and Pakistan at Basin Reserve on January 25, 2016 in Wellington, New Zealand.

Williamson said that this match was not a case of a semifinal hoodoo but he appreciated the way his team played during the entire tournament and that too in high spirit.

“England were very, very good, as simple as that. We played a semifinal not so long ago and we went all right, we didn’t come second. We came first in that one. That’s just cricket. We move on and we look to get better as a team.”

“I enjoyed it. The guys were brilliant and we grew as a unit. On and off the field they were outstanding and we played as a collective and as a team.”
