CHRISTCHURCH: New Zealand made a winning start to their World Cup 2015 campaign as they thrashed Sri Lanka by 98 runs in their match at Christchurch on Saturday, ARY Sports reports.
Corey Anderson was named Player of the Match star for the Kiwis as he scored 75 runs from 46 balls and took two wickets in the match.
The Blackcaps, being sent in to bat first in the match, scored 331 runs in their 50 overs thanks to Anderson’s knock with the bat. Captain Brendon McCullum made 65(49) whereas Kane Williamson contributed 57(65).
Martin Guptill put up fell one short of his half century.
The Sri Lankan bowlers were smashed to all corners of the grounds by the co-hosts. Lasith Malinga conceded 84 in his 10 overs without taking any wickets. Nuwan Kulasekara, in his eight overs, gave 78 runs and took one wicket.
Rangana Herath also grabbed a wicket whereas Suranga Lakmal and Jeevan Mendis shared two wickets each.
In reply, the Lankans were back in the pavilion for 233 runs in 46.1 overs.
Lahiru Thrimanne was the highest scorer for his team as he contributed 65(60) with the bat while Captain Mathews made 46(52). Kumar Sangakkara made 39 runs from 38 balls in the match.
Sri Lankan team kept losing wickets in regular fashion as Blackcaps bowlers Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Adam Milne, Daniel Vettori and Corey Anderson all took two wickets in the game.
