Argentina, New Zealand register first win in hockey world cup


Argentina and New Zealand won their first matches on day 2 of the hockey world cup in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.

Argentina beat Spain by 4-3 while New Zealand walked over France by 2-1 to start their world cup campaign on a winning note.

Agustin Mazzilli and Gonzalo Peillat struck two goals each for Argentina in the first match against Spain which turned out to be a nail-biter.

Enrique Gonzalez on 3rd minute brought an early breakthrough for Spain but two consecutive strikes from opponents on 15th minute put them under pressure.

Josep Romeu and Vicenc Ruiz scored on 14th and 5th minute respectively for Spain.

On the other hand, Kane Russell and Stephen Jenness were the scorers for victors New Zealand in the second match of the day.

Victo Charlet was the lone scorer for France who is participating in the mega event after a gap of almost 28 years.

On the opening day of the tournament, India outclassed South Africa 5-0 to show their dominance at home ground.

Belgium also won their first match against Canada by 2-1 to start their world cup campaign on a high note.

It is pertinent to mention here that Australia will face Ireland while England plays China in their first matches of the tournament on Friday.
