I must say it has been an amazing tournament of entertaining, exciting cricket, a joy to watch. The batsmen and bowlers have given their all for their countries. In each new tournament the standard has increased, more records are broken.
India were the only Asian team to make it to the semis. They deserved the position as they have played exceptionally well. They seemed to be peaking at the right time. This was after a below par tour of Australia beforehand.
India were under pressure as the current World Champions of cricket. They have had a fantastic undefeated run so far, bashing their opponents. If you think the Pakistan team were under immense pressure just spare a thought for India, as their fanatic supporters have even higher expectations in each and every tournament.
In World Cup history only West Indies in 1975 & 1979 and Australia in 1999, 2003 & 2007 have successfully defended their World Champions title in a row.
Winning the toss Australia batted first, racking up 328/7. With Finch making 81, Smith 105 and Johnson smashing 27 off 9 balls at the end.
In response India got off to a decent start, with dropped catches allowing them to get to 76 without loss. However then came a batting collapse 108/4. With superstar Kohli falling for just 1. Dhoni did all he could but gave up the chase after scoring 65. All out for 233, Australia won by 95 runs.
Hats off to Australia for a stunning performance to put India out of the tournament. It was certainly a lacklustre Indian performance, no fighting toughness today. I was expecting a much closer finish.
May be their thoughts were on the upcoming IPL. Unfortunately the Indian administrators still refuse the IPL privilege to Pakistani players.
What a spectacular final we have on Sunday in Melbourne, the mighty Australia versus the battling New Zealand. The arch sporting rivalry between the neighbors will certainly fire up the contest.
Australia already have 4 World Cup titles under their belt. It will be New Zealand very first World Cup Final. The two home teams have made it to the end.
May the best team win!
