Commonwealth Games 2022 to feature cricket

The upcoming Commonwealth Games 2022 is to feature cricket, revealed the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday.

The efforts by the ICC finally paid off for them as the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has included women’s T20 contest in the upcoming edition of the league.

A total of eight teams will participate during eight match days at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham, England.

The Chief Executive of the ICC, Manu Sawhney, thanked CGF for considering the request and including cricket in the plan for upcoming extravaganza. “It is an honor for us to be partnering with CGF. Women’s cricket is growing sport around the world and this step will further boost its status,” he said.

On the other hand, the president of CGF, Dame Louise Martin called T20 format exciting and hopes for long-lasting relations with the ICC. “Cricket is one of the most followed games around the world. We are delighted to include it in our upcoming season and I hope this will enhance its viewership,” Martin highlighted.

It is pertinent to mention here that CFG last featured Men’s 50-overs cricket contest in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. South Africa won that tournament and legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rickey Ponting, Jaque Kallis were the part of that event.
