Disappointing start for Pakistan at Tokyo Olympics 2020


TOKYO: Pakistan’s national badminton champion, Mahoor Shahzad lost her opening match against Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi by 2-0 on Day 1 of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 here at Olympic Stadium.

Mahoor was under pressure against dominant world number 5 Yamaguchi throughout the match. The opponent won the first set of best of three by 21-3 in just 10 minutes. The next set was wrapped up by the Japanese at 21-8 to win the game. A little resistance was shown by Mahoor in the second set but overall, her Japanese counterpart outclassed her in the opening contest.

Mahoor will now face Britain’s Kirsty Gilmour in her second and last match in the event on July 27.

On the other hand, Pakistani shooter Gulfam Joseph missed qualification to the next round by finishing at ninth in men’s 10m AirPistol Qualifications with 578 points. India’s Saurabh Chaudhary topped the qualifying round with a score of 586.

It must be noted here that as many as 10 Pakistan athletes are currently in Tokyo for Olympics 2020 participation.
