Eden Gardens a Tale of Success for Pakistan Cricket

It was 29th November 1989 when India and Pakistan abutted very first time at Eden Gardens Calcutta. Pakistan outplayed India by 77 runs. Skipper Imran Khan didn’t bowl in that match but his 39 balls 47 runs cameo was quite enough to outvote the man of the match award.

In February 1999, India-Pakistan met 2nd time at Eden Gardens, this time, Pakistan witnessed it’s one of the most remarkable victory in test cricket, it was the match of Asian Test championship. Shoaib Akhtar got the eyeballs from all around the world when he sent Sachin Tendulkar for the first ball duck. After facing first innings deficit Pakistan came back strongly in the match and Saeed Anwar carried the bat with career-best 188 which led Pakistan to 46 runs victory. Javagal Srinath claimed 14 wickets in the match and shared the man of the match award with Saeed Anwar. On the last day, the Indian crowd went wild when Sachin Tendulkar went bird of prey on a direct throw from long on by Nadeem Khan. Sachin himself requested to a crowd of hundred thousand in the stadium to calm down. But all in vain, later on security forces evacuated the stadium and match was played in front of empty stands.

In 2004, it was the third encounter between India and Pakistan and the occasion was the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of BCCI; Salman Butt was the hero of that match when he smashed Indian bowlers all around the Eden Gardens to reach his first and match-winning century while Pakistan betrayed all the odds to win the match.

During the short tour of 2012-13, Pakistan was up in the series by 1-0 before they face India at Eden Gardens. This time, another brutal left-hander Nasir Jamshed after classy Saeed Anwar and Talented Salman Butt got the man of the match award as a result of his memorable ton. Pakistan not only claimed the victory in the match but also clinched the ODI series after 8 years against India.

So history is with team Pakistan for the world T20 encounter at Eden Gardens, but India has never lost to Pakistan in world cups.

It would be really a great fun as the world is going to witness the high voltage clash between two cricketing powerhouses at Eden Gardens; which has lost its capacity to only 68000 after modification in its design. It would be a great opportunity to the 4 talented young left-handers Pakistan have in their gendarmerie. Mohammad Aamir doesn’t need any introduction, Immad Wasim caught the eyes after his debut for Pakistan. While the devastating opening batsman Sharjeel Khan and extremely high rated left-handed all-rounder Muhammad Nawaz have impressed all of us in PSL.
