England beat Afghanistan by nine wickets in rain reduced encounter

SYDNEY: Beleaguered England cricket team recorded nine-wicket triumph against Afghanistan in rain reduced encounter in World Cup Pool A match here at Sydney Cricket Ground.

Chasing a revised target of 101 runs in 25 overs, England lost only one wicket as Ian Bell scored an unbeaten 52 to reach the victory total in 18.1 overs. England lost only Alex Hales (37) when Hamid Hasan took his wicket after wicketkeeper Afzar Zazai took his catch.

Earlier, Afghanistan scored a paltry total of 111-7 in 36.2 overs with rain stopping play on several occasions. Shafiqullah top scored for the side with 30 runs. Chris Jordan and Ravi Bopara took two wickets each.
