Lahore: The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) president and former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara has shared his joy for the tour as the MCC is playing in Pakistan for the first time in 47 years.
“It’s been 47 years for MCC and ten years for me personally coming back to Pakistan. On behalf of MCC, we are thrilled to be here,” Kumar said in a press conference at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore along with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Cheif Executive Wasim Khan
The 42-year-old emphasized that the tour of Pakistan has been in discussion for a long period of time in the MCC meetings but after witnessing the arrangements and improvements, the tour was on the top of the list.
“Thank you to the PCB and especially Wasim because when he came to present the proposal in the MCC meeting, it was an eye-opener for us on how he delivered the points to us and after that presentation, the decision was swiftly made to play in Pakistan,” he added.
The left-hander remembered the occasion where he played one of the best knocks at Gaddafi Stadium where he scored a double-hundred in the Asian Test Championship in 2002
“Immense memories of playing in Lahore against the great players like Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Abdul, Razzaq, Inzamam-ul-Haq, who went on to become great players,”
He pointed out the importance of honors board which display players who have scored centuries in Test cricket previously when the elite format was regularly being played in the Gadaffi Stadium.
“After viewing the board of players scoring a hundred, it underlines the importance of cricket being played here. For most of the Pakistan players who are becoming greats in their own rights by the likes of Babar Azam, Asad Shafiq for them to be able to play cricket here in front of their home fans as they go up and chant their names,” he maintained.
He called out other countries to play here and be part of this act to support cricket in the region.
“As the president of the MCC, I am proud of playing a part and be able to encourage other countries to play in Pakistan as one of the best cricketing nations,” he added.
It must be noted that the MCC squad has arrived in Pakistan where they will play three T20s and one fifty-over encounter at Gaddafi Stadium and Aitchison College from 13-19th February.
