Recently, cricket.com.au ran a poll with a name of ODI GOAT to find out the greatest ODI player of the history in view of fans.
In the final stage, fans had to chose between the Little Master Sachin Tendulkar and the stylish Lankan Kumara Sangakkara as they defeated all their opponents in previous stages. Surprisingly, Sangakkara got more votes from fans all around the globe than the Indian batting legend and named as the Greatest Player in the ODI history.
The Sri Lankan great has scored 14,234 runs in 404 matches with an average of 41.98, whereas, Sachin has scored 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs with an average of 44.83. However, it seems like Sanga’s exceptional glove work gave him the edge over the Indian batting great.
The ODI GOAT was run as a head to head contest between 64 selected players by the Cricket.com.au editors. The selected players were divided into the categories of batsmen, allrounders, bowlers and wicketkeepers initially.
It created a stir on social media, fans were talking about the contest, were convincing other people to vote for their idols and waited for the new ODI GOAT head to head competition everyday.
Pakistan’s Imran Khan was in the contest till the quarter final, but, Sangakkara surpassed him. The most surprizing result for Pakistan was Waqar Younis winning against the Sultan of Swing, Wasim akram.
