LAHORE: Habib Bank Limited (HBL) registered a convincing win against WAPDA by 62 runs to win the Quaid-e-Azam One Day Cup on Sunday at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore.
WAPDA won the toss and elected to bowl first in the all-important game. HBL did not have the ideal of starts as they lost their opener Jamal Anwar (20) on 34 runs, while Imam Ul Haq (21) fell at an aggregate total of 76.
The seasoned left-handed batsman, Imran Farhat had a 30-run partnership with Umar Akmal before former got out at an individual score of 40 runs.
Akmal joined hands with Ramiz Aziz, when the pair started to look threatening, the partnership was broken by Zulfiqar Babar when it was it was 40-run mature by removing Akmal, who missed his half-century by 1 run.
Aziz and Zohaib Khan had an impressive stay at the crease contributing 59 runs together. Aziz scored 55 runs while Khan struck 68 runs.
HBL finished their inning on 291/7 in their quota of 50 overs. Arshad Iqbal was expensive but he took two wickets in the inning, whereas, Mohammad Irfan, Wahab Riaz, Khalid Usman and Zulfiqar Babar struck once.
As WAPDA came out to chase, they lost their experienced opener Kamran Akmal cheaply. Salman Butt had a handy 98-run partnership with Rifatullah Mohmand, but the strike-rate of the left-handed batsman was not impressive which beefed up their problems.
WAPDA kept losing wickets at regular intervals as their batsmen threw away good starts, scoring in 20s and 30s.
Apart from Butt’s 56 and Mohmand’s 51, the mentionable scores were 30, 21 and 20 by Muhammad Akhlaq, Zahid Mansoor and Ayaz Tasawwar respectively.
In the end, WAPDA fell 62 runs short as they got all-out on 229 runs in 44.4 overs.
The fast bowling all-rounder, Ammad Butt was the pick of the bowler for HBL who took three wickets, on the other hand Khurram Shehzad and Agha Salman took two, while the skipper Umar Gul picked one wicket in the match.
