The WBC Silver Flyweight Champion, Muhammad Waseem’s trainer Jeff Mayweather is hoping to see the World Championship belt around his waist before the end of this year.
Talking to ARY Sports, Mayweather had all praises for Muhammad Waseem and he sees a big star in the Pakistani pugilist.
“I’m expecting Waseem to be a World Champion before the end of this year,” he said. “I think Waseem can become a huge star in boxing he’s a very exciting fighter, very entertaining to watch, he can box and if needed, he can also go to war in the trenches,” he added.
The USA based trainer and former boxer is looking forward to visit Pakistan with the ‘World Champion’ Muhammad Waseem.
“It will be great to bring the belt to Pakistan for all the fans who have supported him. Our goal is to make Pakistan proud and I would certainly celebrate the victory with him in Pakistan,” he shared.
Unfortunately, lack of funds is something that is holding the 29-year old back. Earlier, government released a grant of Rs. 24.675 million for him, however, his promoter Andy Kim has not received the amount yet.
“Lack of funds are sitting us back when it comes to preparation for the upcoming fight,” Mayweather stated. Still, he is hopeful that the matter will be resolved in time, “I’m sincerely hoping that it’s just some miscommunication and that things will be taken care of in a timely manner.”
On the other hand, he told that Waseem is confident that he will get the promised amount from the Government of Pakistan.
“Waseem has complete confidence that the funding will be delivered in order to make this fight happen and I for once hope he is right as well,” he told.
Commenting on Oscar Cantu, Waseem’s next opponent, he said that he is a solid young fighter and they will have to put a lot of effort to overcome him and get the world title shot.
“I watched the films of Waseems next opponent (Oscar Cantu) and he’s a very solid young fighter. We will need a very good training camp to get ready for this upcoming fight and for Waseem to remain Champion and eventually fight for the World Title before the end of the year,” he stated.
Jeff Mayweather, uncle of arguably the greatest boxer of this era, Floyd Mayweather, has confidence on his trainee. He shared the reasons why Waseem is a class apart in his weight category.
“What makes Waseem a special fighter is his work ethic and his knowledge of boxing as well as his extensive amateur background has him mentally and physically prepared for battle with anyone in his weight class,” he went on to say.
