India’s veteran female boxer, Mary Kom missed a key chance to qualify to the Rio Olympics on Thursday losing her fight against China’s Ren Cancan by unanimous decision.
The bout of Asian Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament took place in Qian’an, where Ren had the home crowd support that were chanting and cheering for her against the five times World Boxing Champion, Mary.
The finalists will qualify to the Rio Olympics 2016 irrespective of the outcome of the time final. Mary Kom looked a bit off color in the fight as she couldn’t land her blows on Ren, who herself is a three time World Boxing Champion.
Mary Kom, the 33 year Indian boxing star will get two more chances to get a ticket to Rio at World Championships in May and in a competition in Azerbaijan in June.
Mary Kom defeated Nesthy Petecio of Philippines to book a spot in the semi finals of the Asia Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament.
Ren won the silver model in London Olympics 2012, it was the first instance where Olympics featured women’s boxing competitions.
