Sri Lanka Cricket announced Kusal Parera as the replacement for the injured right-arm pacer, Dhammika Prasad in the test squad in England.
Parera was seen as an emerging Sri Lankan star before he was wrongly accused of consuming banned substances in December. However, it was later revealed that he was innocent and the ICC withdrew its charges against him. He has been eligible to play for Sri Lanka since May 11.
Kusal Parera’s role model, Sanath Jayasuriya who is also the chief selector of Sri Lanka explained his decision of sending a wicketkeeper batsman to replace a pacer saying, “(we) have enough bowlers in the squad”.
“Kusal will join the team as soon as possible and acclimatise so he can do some serious work with the bat,” Jayasuriya added.
The aggressive left-handed batsman is likely to miss the second test match of the series that is to kick off from Friday in Chester-le-Street due to visa process.
Sri Lanka will have him available for selection for the third test which is scheduled from June 9th at Lord’s.
Kusal Parera began his test career explosively by scoring two half centuries in the five innings that he has played.
England crushed Sri Lanka by an innings and 88 runs in the first test match as James Anderson rattled Sri Lankan batting line.
England has a 1-0 lead in the 3-match test series. Sri Lankan batting failed miserably in the opening test, however Kusal Parera can strengthen his team’s batting lineup.
