Ireland won the tri-series in the United Arab Emirates, edging out Afghanistan and Scotland, as the final match of the tournament, between Scotland and Ireland, was abandoned without a ball being bowled on Monday.

Afghanistan finished second with four points after two wins, while Scotland finished last with three points.

Rain ruled out any possibility of play after Ireland won the toss and chose to field, after handing a One-Day International cap to Peter Chase, the right-arm paceman, at the ICC Academy in Dubai.

Ireland made four changes for the final game, bringing in Stuart Thompson, Andrew McBrine, Chase and Max Sorensen to the side that lost to Afghanistan on Saturday.

Sorensen had been drafted into the World Cup squad after Tim Murtagh was ruled out with a foot fracture.

Ireland and Scotland picked up one point each from the match. That meant Ireland, with five points, was at the top of the table, having won two of the four games played.

Ireland opens its ICC World Cup 2015 campaign against the West Indies on February 16 at the Saxton Oval, Nelson.
