After waiting for too long, the first day of the historic test match between Ireland vs Pakistan was abandoned without a single ball being bowled. The first day gave a shock to the hosts as the refunds for the 5,100 tickets sold cost €75,000.
It is understood that Cricket Ireland have spent Euro 1m to stage the country’s first men’s Test but the wet and windy Malahide ground did not allow the players to start the game.
Ireland cricket chief executive Warren Deutrom also seems unhappy, he said “Yes, of course it’s disappointing,” he said, “but what I don’t want to do is go around with a long face, projecting misery. Because it isn’t that. We’re still hugely proud and there are still four days to go.”
However, the weekend weather forecast is for brighter, drier conditions and play is scheduled to resume today at 11:00 BST.
Ireland’s inaugural Test comes more than a decade after their shock win over Pakistan at the 2007 World Cup.
