The ongoing episode of ICC’s sting operation against Off spinners has a new entry. Sri Lankan off spinner Tharindu Kaushal has been banned from bowling the controversial variation that is the Doosra with immediate effect after the tests carried out by the ICC in Chennai has revealed that Kaushal had flexed his arm beyond the mandatory 15 degree limit in accordance with the ICC rules.
Kaushal was reported for suspect bowling action during the third test match against India at Colombo. It is evident that after being refrained from bowling this variety Kaushal will find it difficult to trap the batsmen during the longer format as Off spinners are heavily reliant on the Doosra to get them wickets. Although having said this his conventional off break delivery is cleared by the centre in Chennai.
The young off spinner was slowly becoming an integral part of the Lankan spin attack in tests and complimented Hearth really well. After making his debut in December 2014 against the Blackcap, he had in a short span of 6 test matches has already taken 2 five wicket hauls against Pakistan and India respectively averaging 42.
It remains to be seen as to whether he can make a comeback and alter his Doosra which is in line with international standards. Keeping in mind what happened to other off spinners facing something similar, such as the likes of Ajmal and Hafeez, things will not be easy from here onwards for the Lankan spinner.
