Know your Champions Trophy squad: Azhar Ali
Azhar Ali

Pakistan’s former ODI skipper, Azhar Ali is probably one of the most underrated batsman of world cricket. Though, he struggles to pace his inning in the 50-over format, but he provides the stability to Pakistan batting at the top of the order.

Azhar Ali donned his Pakistan colours in ODIs against Ireland in May 2011 almost a year after making his Test debut in July 2010 in a game opposite Australia at Lord’s.

The 32-year old had an impressive start to his career scoring at almost an average of 40 runs, but his strike rate was a concern for the think tank. He played his last game in January 2013, before returning in the team as a skipper after Misbah Ul Haq’s retirement in 2015.

Azhar Ali returned in ODI team with a bang and at a stage he was close to become the fastest batsman to reach 1,000 ODI runs, however he missed out on the record and reached there in 23 innings, two innings too late.

But, Azhar Ali could not let the team to much of success, as a result, he was axed as the ODI skipper and also dropped from the team for the ODI series against Australia in Australia.

The star Test batsman of Pakistan will be making his another comeback in 50-over format of the game and in England, his experience can come extremely handy for the team.

Pakistan will take on the arch-rivals, India in their opening game of the multi-national cricketing event of June 4.
