Multan: Saif Badar of Southern Punjab (SP) charged Mohammad Hafeez in the last over but fell seven runs short as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa clinched the eighth match of the National T20 Cup by 6 runs.
22 runs needed off the last over, KP’s skipper Rizwan handed the ball to veteran cricketer Mohammad Hafeez who looked confident to defend the target. But, Badar was in a different mood as he struck 15 runs off him including a six and a four.
SP needed seven runs off the last ball, Hafeez bowled a full toss but it was missed by Badar and the match went in KP’s favor who retained second position on points table with two wins out of three matches.
While batting first KP scored 200-5 in 20 overs. Captain Rizwan (55) and Mohammad Hafeez (67) scored 100 runs together for the second wicket partnership.
Rizwan scored 55 off 39 deliveries with the help of 39 balls while Hafeez played 25 balls to score 67 runs laced with five boundaries and as many sixes.
Later on, Iftikhar Ahmed did his job down the order as he smashed 45 runs to further strengthen his team’s total. He struck three fours and as many sixes.
For SP, Hussain Talat and Rahat Ali bagged two wickets each while Zahid Mehmood took one.
In reply, SP lost their openers Zeeshan Ashraf and Shan Masood in back-to-back successions for just 23 runs. Ashraf scored 15 while Masood managed to get 7 runs on his behalf.
Sohaib Maqsood and Hussain Talat took charge after Umar Siddique (16) fell to Junaid Khan leaving SP tattering at 52-3. They both scored 78 runs together with Maqsood contributing 77 off 40 balls while Talat scoring 38 off 22 balls with the help of six fours.
In the end, it was Badar who went for an attempt to score 22 runs in the last over to hand first victory to SP. He made 22 runs off 17 balls with the help of a six and boundary.
Left-arm pacer Khan was pick of the bowlers for KP as he picked up three wickets for 26 runs.
