Morgan, Malan inspire England to five-wicket win over Pakistan in 2nd T20I

Manchester: England captain Eoin Morgan and left-handed batsman Dawid Malan inspired England to an emphatic chase against Pakistan in the second T20I at Old Trafford.

The duo added a 112-run stand for the third wicket to chase down a mammoth total of 196 with 5 balls to spare. The hosts are 1-0 up in the three-match T20I series.

Earlier, Morgan won the important toss and decided to bowl first. Pakistan’s opening duo of Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman provided a great stand of 72. Fakhar scored 36 off 22 balls until he was removed by Adil Rashid in the ninth over.

Later Rashid removed skipper Babar Azam, who made 56 off 44 balls, scoring his 14th T20I fifty and reaching 1500 runs in this format.

Veteran Mohammad Hafeez was the standout performer with the bat, smashing 69 off 36 balls which included five fours and four massive sixes. Hafeez became the second Pakistani batsman after Shoiab Malik to reach 2000 runs landmark. He also became the first player in men’s T20I history to score 2000 runs and take 50 wickets.

Shoaib Malik made 14 off 11 balls, whereas Iftikhar Ahmed remained not out on 8. Rashid was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, picking two scalps. Chris Jordan and Tom Curran claimed a wicket each.

England started off the innings in great fashion. Opener Tom Banton did not look at his usual best in today’s match. He departed for a 16-ball 20.

Wicket-keeper batsman Jonny Bairstow showed his class, scoring 44 runs from 24 balls. He hit four boundaries along with two maximum. Leg-spinner Shadab Khan took two wickets in two balls to bring his side back in the game.

However, captain Morgan stole the show from thereon. He scored a 33-ball 66 with a strike rate of 200, hitting six boundaries and four massive sixes. He was awarded the player of the match.

England’s Mr. consistent Dawid Malan also stood by his side. He completed another T20I fifty before hitting the winning boundary.

Shadab Khan took 3 wickets for Pakistan while pacer Haris Rauf took two. The final encounter between both sides will take place on Tuesday.
