MIAMI: Former World No. 1 Rafael Nadal was eliminated from the Miami Open in the third round on Sunday after losing 6-4 2-6 6-3 to fellow Fernando Verdasco while Andy Murray won his match in straight sets against Santiago Giraldo, ARYSports.tv reports.
Verdasco has emerged victorious in his last two encounters against Nadal.
Verdasco generated problems and broke Nadal in the eighth game due to a double fault from the 14 Grand Slam winner.
Nadal made a comeback in the second set. He broke Verdasco twice and took the match to the third set.
The match went in Verdasco’s favor as he broke Nadal to make it 3-1 in the third set.
Adrian Mannarino shocked Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets 7-6(4) 7-6(5).
Andy Murray progressed to the 16 stage after defeating Santiago Giraldo 6-3 6-4.
Murray did not face much resistance although Giraldo’s approach in the second set turned the match interesting as he battled back from 5-1 down before Murray clinched the match in 84 minutes.
Tomas Berdych saved four match points to beat Bernard Tomic 6-7(4) 7-6(3) 6-1.
