Misbah has not applied for the coaching job yet

Pakistan’s former captain, Misbah Ul Haq revealed that he is yet to apply for the post of national team’s head coach amid rumours of him being the front-runner for the job.

There were reports that the former right-handed batsman has emerged as the favourite contender to replace South Africa’s Mickey Arthur as the head coach of the team.

After World Cup 2019, on the recommendations made by the PCB cricket committee, the board decided not extend coaching staff’s contracts any further.

People were showing reservations over Misbah’s position in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s Cricket Committee and also being the favourite candidate for the role of head coach.

While talking to media in Lahore, the most successful skipper of Pakistan cleared the air saying he will resign from the PCB cricket committee when he will apply for the job to avoid the conflict of interest.

“I have not decided yet whether to apply for the job or not,” said Misbah. “If I will apply for the job, I will quit cricket committee.”

Former players and pundits have criticized the unconfirmed news of handing over the responsibilities of the head coach to Misbah for not being a qualified coach. However, Misbah said that he has done level 2 coaching course from the PCB as well as from the ECB.

Moreover, discussing about the expected dual role of being the head coach and the chief selector, he said it help hold one man responsible for team’s performance.

The 45-year-old also talked about the ongoing pre-season conditioning camp, which is attended by 14 centrally contracted players while six other cricketers of the country.

“I was consulted for the name of players attending the conditioning camp. They must have been selected on their performance in the domestic cricket. Our first priority is to work with centrally contracted players along with other players in the selectors’ radar,” he said. “Muhammad Hasnain was also a part of the camp, but he pulled out due to his contract with the Caribbean Premier League.”

Misbah also revealed that the board makes the decision of captains across all three formats, however, he believes there must have been some discussions regarding change in captaincy in different formats of the game.
