Misbah regrets for not producing desired results as coach, team on England’s tour

Lahore: Pakistan men’s team head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq has expressed his regrets over not meeting expectations and not producing desired results as a coach and as a team during the England tour where they played three-Test and as many T20Is.

While speaking to the reporters in Lahore, however, despite losing Misbah said that the team have identified positive things from the tour. “On the tour, we should have won the Test series 1-0 and T20 series 2-0. The results of the series will always be regretted but despite it, we have found a lot of positive things,” Misbah said.

Decline in T20I rankings

Misbah refused to accept that the rankings of the men’s team decline during his tenure and reminded that the team was on a losing streak before his appointment.

“When I took over the coaching, the performance of our T20 team was going down. We lost to South Africa, England. The main aspect of declining was the performances of our main players,” he said.

“We are trying to push new players towards it and how they played in the T20 series against England. These are the signs that we are going in the right direction,” he added.

Young bowling line-up

Misbah wants that they should give time and leverage to young bowling line-up in Test cricket. “We have to understand that our bowling is inexperienced. We are working with them. It is a process of getting mature and gaining experience for which we have to show some patience,” Misbah said.

“Naseem and Shaheen are young, to deliver Anderson-Broad like performances they need a lot of time and experience, based on their experience I am satisfied with them on this tour,” he maintained.

“I hope they will get better. If we exclude that one session of the first Test and a few overs in the second T20I where we got panicked. Those are the things where we have to improve,” he added.

Babar Azam captaincy

Misbah termed Babar as the powerful captain and the management is trying to empower him as a leader. “He is powerful, he takes his own decision. There will be moments when things will not go right and it happens with every captain. Overall things will improve,” he said.

Trying different combinations till T20 World Cup

Misbah backed the inclusion of Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Hafeez in the side and not write them off on the basis of their age.

“They can go till the T20 World Cup. Wahab and Hafeez have shown their performances. Their averages and strike rates are according to the demand of international cricket, ” he said.

“They all are under consideration and we are trying different combinations in order to find the best 15 for the World Cup,” he added.
