London: England allrounder Moeen Ali has been recalled to the Test squad ahead of the second Test against India at Lord’s that begins on Thursday (August 12).
Moeen, who has been leading Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred, is expected to join the squad on Tuesday and is in contention to feature in the XI straightaway.
He has been in fine form in the inaugural edition of the Hundred scoring 189 runs so far in six outings but hasn’t featured in red-ball cricket in almost six months.
His most recent outing in the longest format came in February this year in Chennai where he picked up eight wickets in England’s loss. Following the game, he headed back home as part of the ECB’s policy to rotate their players who feature regularly in all formats.
England didn’t pick a spinner in the opening Test at Trent Bridge with Jack Leach warming the benches. Except for Joe Root, the rest of the batting unit appeared to be under the pump in both the innings of the drawn Test.
