Pakistan test skipper Misbah ul haq was popularly knwon as Mr Tuk Tuk when he played the shorter format but a careful analysis of his batting depicts a different picture and shows that this was not the case.

Misbah has 42 ODI fifties.Out of those 42 fifties, Misbah has scored:

7 fifties with the strike rate of 100+
6 fifties with the strike rate of 90+
7 fifties with the strike rate of 80+
8 fifties with the strike rate of 70+
9 fifties with the strike rate of 60+
4 fifties with the strike rate of 50+
1 fifty with the strike rate of 40+

That means he has scored 28 fifties with decent strike rate. So let’s see why has he scored those 9 fifties with strike rate of 60?

1: His first fifty (with strike rate in 60s) came against Australia when we were 158-6. Shoaib Malik was in that match too & he scored 37 runs with the strike rate of 39.76 when he came at 37/2. That match was in 2002.

2: His second fifty (with strike rate in 60s) came against Sri Lanka in 2011 when we were chasing 219 & YK, Shafiq, Malik were in the team. He came at 113/3 & scored a fifty with the strike rate of 66.66. Akmal won us that match by scoring unbeaten 61(60).

3: His third fifty (with strike rate in 60s) came against West Indies in 2013 when he came at 92/3 after 27.1 overs & scored 75 runs with the strike rate of 66.96. That match was tied because WI needed 3 runs on last ball & Wahab conceded only 2 runs.

4: His fourth fifty (with strike rate in 60s) came against West Indies once again when we were 123/3 after 30.2 overs because Shehzad scored 64 runs with the strike rate of 64. Anyhow, Misbah scored 63 runs in 93 balls with the strike rate of 67.74 & Afridi won that match by scoring 13 runs in 6 balls.

5: His fifth fifty (with strike rate in 60s) came against Sri Lanka when he came to bat at 128/4 after 28.3 overs & scored 51 runs in 74 balls with the strike rate of 68.91. Umar Akmal scored 20 in 37 balls with the strike rate of 54.05, Sharjeel scored 18 in 35 balls with the strike rate of 51.42, Hafeez scored 41 in 56 with the strike rate of 73.21.

6: His sixth fifty (with strike rate in 60s) came against Sri Lanka once again in Asia Cup 2013 final. He came to bat when we were 3/18 & scored 65 runs in 98 balls with the strike rate of 66.32. In that match Fawad scored 114 runs in 134 balls with the strike rate of 85.07 & Umar also scored 59 runs with strike rate of 140.47.

7: His seventh fifty (with strike rate in 60s) came against New Zealand in 2015. He came to bat when we were 32/3 after 11.2 overs & scored 58 runs in 87 balls with the strike rate of 66.66. Shahid Afridi scored 67 runs in that match.

8: His eighth fifty (with strike rate in 60s) came against Zimbabwe in WC15. He came to bat when we where 58/3 in 20 overs & scored 73 runs in 121 balls with the strike rate of 60.33. Wahab Riaz scored fifty in that match. Afridi and Shehzad both scored ducks in that match, and shehzad faced 11 balls without scoring a run.

9: His ninth fifty (with strike rate in 60s) came against South Africa in WC15. He came to bat at 132/3 after 26.4 overs, stayed there & scored 56 runs in 86 balls with the strike rate of 65.11, no one stayed with him & everyone kept getting out, Misbah was the 8th batsmen to get out. As you all know we won that match by 29 runs, through D/L method.

Those fifties with strike rate in 50s came when we were 3/54, 3/58, 4/57, 3/12 & I guess you all know why he played slow.

And the fifty with the strike rate of 42 came when we were 3/21 against West Indies.

Misbah ul haq has been a great servant for Pakistan cricket and its sometimes unfair to criticize so much for his slow and steady batting. He lead Pakistan when they were going through a turmoil after the spot fixing scandal and their backs were against the wall and if we were without the services of Misbah we may not have been able to reach the level we are right now in all formats.
