New Zealand were dismissed for 317 to trail Australia by 239 runs on the first innings on the third day of the first Gabba Test on Saturday.
Kane Williamson was last man out, caught behind off Mitchell Starc for 140.
Starc took the last two wickets to finish the innings with four for 57.
Australian captain Steve Smith
decided against enforcing the follow on and instead chose to bat a second time to build a potential match-winning lead with 50 overs left to bowl on the third day.
