Babar Masih and Mohammad Asif defeated compatriots Asjad Iqbal and Mohammad Sajjad to claim the International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF) World Team Snooker Championship in Hurghada, Egypt on Thursday.

The winning pair, named Pakistan 2, was one of the two Pakistan teams the country’s snooker body fielded in the tournament — both of which made it to the final after a blistering run throughout.

The all-Pakistan finale witnessed some exquisite control with the cue and near-perfect snooker. Pakistan 2 started off brilliantly, winning the first two frames convincingly 76-08 and 74-34.

Asjad and Sajjad, however, hit back in third frame to win it 26-70, playing a break of 60. But the winners were quick to regain the lead by winning fourth frame 78-52.

Pakistan 1 continued to fight back and won the fifth and sixth frames with scores of 52-31 and 53-02, respectively to make it 3-all.

The exchange of advantage was frequent with Pakistan 1 above the eventual champions 68-13 after winning the 8th frame.

However, later Babar and Asif finished it off with success with an overall score of 76-08(50), 74-34, 26-70(60), 78-52, 31-52, 02-53, 46-44, 13-68, 70-29.

This is the second time Pakistan has won the world team title, with the maiden honour coming in 2013 thanks to Asif and Sajjad’s pair.

The win added up to make it three snooker titles for Pakistan in the space of fewer than four months after winning Asian 6 Reds and World U18 Snooker Championship earlier this year.
