Pakistan cleared for Azlan Shah hockey tournament

Pakistan team has been invited for Sultan Azlan Shah hockey tournament. The Green shirts after staying out for 2 years are back to participate in the event based on the organizers decision to increase the number of teams from 6 to 8, which has also given a chance to Japan.

The organizers have reconsidered the format and approved to increase the number of teams from 6 to 8 planned for the scheduled event to be played next year in April. Before this decision the teams participating in the tournament including the host Malaysia were India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Argentine. The addition of two teams Pakistan and Japan now brings the total to 8.

In the 2014 edition Pakistan refused to participate due to PHF’s financial constraints, this year the organizers expressed their anger by not inviting Pakistan team due to its unexpected refusal shown last year. The Sultan Azlan Shah tournament began in Malaysia in 1983 and is held every year. The Green Shirts have not only been regular participants of this tournament every year but have shown excellent performance which is evident from the numbers of medals won, 3 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze.
