Pakistan won a gold medal after defeating India by 11-2 in a baseball game of Dubai Baseball Cup played at Emirates Little Baseball Field on UAE’s Independence Cay.
Pakistan Baseball Federation (PBF) Executive Director, Fakhar Ali Shah told Express Tribune that contest was a substitute to the West Asia Cup, which took place in Pakistan earlier in the year, where India could not compete due to non-issuance of visas. The other teams that participated in the campaign were Sri Lanka, Nepal, Iraq and Iran along with the hosts.
“The Indian team was not issued Pakistani visas and missed the event which also affected their ranking, so Pakistan and Indian Baseball Federation decided to play a ranking match at a neutral venue. Following the agreement, both federations requested the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) and they gave this match the desired stature,” Fakhar said.
He is happy with his team’s performance and stated that the win against India will help Pakistan to improve their rankings.
“The team played really well and performed outstandingly against India,” he said. “This will help Pakistan in rising up the world rankings.”
Pakistan scored 11 runs in nine innings, whereas, India in reply, could only score two runs, that too one run in the second and the third inning of the game.
Umair Imdad Bhatti was named as the player of the match courtesy of his five runs as a batter, which also featured a home run.
In the presentation ceremony, the president of UAE Baseball Softball Federation said that he was glad to see Pakistan and India play in Dubai.
“It was good to see India and Pakistan baseball teams in Dubai and I hope that the series will be fruitful for the promotion and the development of baseball in Dubai,” he expressed.
