The former Test cricketer and member of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup winning squad Aqib Javed highly rated Pakistan’s squad for the World Cup and said that the national side selected good spinners.
“The English condition is not too favorable for spin bowlers but still I think that bowlers like Shadab and Imad can disturb the batsmen there,” said Aqib while talking to the media in Lahore.
Aqib said that Pakistan’s batting line also looks strong as Faheem Ashraf and Imad Wasim can be lethal for the green shirts at number 7 and 8. “I think we are pretty tough with our batting line as well for the mega event,” said Aqib who rated Pakistan favorites to win the coveted title.
Aqib, 46, thinks that the skills of players should also remain the selection criteria along with fitness. “Not only fitness should be the criteria for selection as skills are important to win matches,” said Aqib while giving the example of Pakistan’s former Test captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, who remained one of the prolific batsmen around the world for over a decade.
To a query about Amir’s exclusion from provisional World Cup squad, Aqib said that the left-hander got immense chances in the last couple of years but he failed to resist with the bowl. “No doubt in Amir’s ability and if he performs well against England then maybe the selectors would think about him for the World Cup,” Aqib added.
It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan will leave for the UK on April 23 where they will play a five-match ODI series against the hosts scheduled from May 8 to 19.
