Hailing from Quetta, Pakistani female Karateka Nagris Hameedullah has been voted ARY Sportsperson of the year 2018.
In a seven-way poll, people in a big number expressed their love for their favourite athletes during voting. Eventually, the sports lovers voted for their favourite athlete with Nargis coming out on top having 55% of the vote.
She was competing against big names including Fakhar Zaman, Yasir Shah, Sana Mir, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Luka Modric and Novak Djokovic.
The 20-year-old athlete has won a bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games, which was the first medal for Pakistan in Asian Games karate competitions. She outclassed Nepal’s Karki Rita by 1-3 to in the 68+ kg category to claim the victory.
She is also the first female karate master to win a medal for Pakistan at an international event.
Despite lack of facilities, Nargis has made the country proud. She believes that if the government will facilitate the athletes with foreign coaches, they will be able to perform even better.
